The Canada Greener Homes Energy Grant & Loan
How do I qualify for the grant or loan?
Grant:
- Own a detached, semi-detached, row house or mobile home on permanent foundation
- Rental properties are not eligible
- The home is your primary residence
- Natural gas, oil, propane, wood heated, or electrically heated homes qualify
Loan:
- Eligible properties – same as Greener Homes Grant requirements
- Loan applications must be made before retrofit work commences, NOT retroactive
- Jointly administered by NRCan and CMHC, and Intellifi as the service provider
- CMHC will verify the following:
- Borrower income and employment
- Debt obligations and Borrower capacity to repay the Loan (TDS)
- Borrower credit worthiness
- Credit Score 650
- Total Debt Service (TDS) ratio – max 44
- Homeownership
- Borrower Identity
- Contractor quotes, purchase orders as applicable
- Completion of retrofits as evidence through Final invoices and post retrofit evaluation
- Applicant has 30 days after the date the loan is funded to the homeowner, before repayments begin
- Sale of the Property would require full repayment of the loan
How much will I save?
Grant:
- Maximum total Rebate of $5600
- $600 audit fee refund
- Up to $5,000 in rebates per home
- Limited to only one application per home ($5000 maximum lifetime)
Loan:
- Up to $40,000 loan, minimum $5000 loan
- 10-year repayment
- Loan type: unsecured personal loan on approved credit
- At the time of the initial loan application, the loan amount is based on the estimated costs of the retrofits intended to be completed, less the estimated grant amount, to a maximum of $40,000
How do I apply for the grant or loan?
Grant:
- Submit application for the grant
- Log in to your Canada Greener Homes Grant account
- Complete a pre-installation assessment with a qualified EnerGuide Inspector
- You must have an energy assessment and register your place of residence before you begin any upgrades
- Install a qualifying, EnerGuide rated Air Source Heat Pump system
- Complete a post-installation EnerGuide evaluation
- Provide copies of your receipts for energy upgrades
- Request and receive your grant

- Log in to your Canada Greener Homes Grant account and click on the button to access the loan portal
- Receive a pre-installation EnerGuide evaluation
- Plan retrofits and receive a quote from contractors
- Install a qualifying, EnerGuide rated Air Source Heat Pump system
- Receive a post-installation EnerGuide evaluation
- Receive loan
